Following our nomination of Gloucester Service back in May <\/a>(alongside a allied nomination by\u00a0Matson and Robinswood Residents Group) we are delighted to announce that the project won both the New Build Category AND was\u00a0the Overall Award Winner!<\/p>\n

The ceremony took place in London last week, with the Society represented by Tim Mars.<\/p>\n

Matson residents and community partners came up with the\u00a0unique idea of making the M5 motorway immediately adjacent\u00a0to Matson a route to income, training and employment for local\u00a0communities by developing Gloucester Services into an embassy\u00a0for Gloucestershire.\u00a0Gloucestershire Gateway Trust teamed up with Westmorland,\u00a0who own and run the only independent motorway services in\u00a0the country, to deliver this vision.\u00a0The judges were unanimous in recommending Gloucester\u00a0Services Northbound as winner of the New Buildings category\u00a0and also the clear overall winner of the Civic Voice Design\u00a0Awards 2015.<\/p>\n

The project has taken what is usually the most dismal of buildings\u00a0and developed it into a resource and showcase for local people,\u00a0products and produce, boosting the local economy. It sets an\u00a0outstanding vision for the design of motorway service stations\u00a0for the future.\u00a0The vision the community have relentlessly pursued is utterly\u00a0commendable. Its use of the surrounding rural landscape and\u00a0farming community to improve employment, training and skills\u00a0in neighbouring deprived communities has been an outstanding\u00a0achievement.This is an amazing project, totally original, community led, well\u00a0designed and commercially successful too. Gloucester Services\u00a0Northbound is a fantastic precedent for strong community cooperative\u00a0led design, which we hope is replicated across the\u00a0country.<\/p>\n
