Summer Programme 2019:  Our summer programme is in the course of being finalised. We have a visit booked to Westwell Garden, near Burford on June 27th. This is one of the most beautiful gardens in Gloucestershire and rarely open to the public.

Visits are also being arranged to Kings Cross to see the striking new canalside development with its amazing modern architecture and Llanthony Priory Seconda at Gloucester, recently restored to a very high standard while Tim Mars Is planning another of his legendary trips to Newport. And there is more in the pipeline awaiting final confirmation including our entry for Heritage Open Day.

Events Diary: We have talks throughout the year, supplemented by visits in summer and a special Christmas event each winter. Many of our visits are to buildings not otherwise open to the public. Note that the default Diary only shows future events – for previous events follow the links lower down the page.  If few or no events are listed below it will be because we are finalising the new season’s programme (see notes above).

Visit to Westwell Manor Garden, a Special Cotswold Garden, Burford

Thursday, June 27th @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

A visit to Westwell Manor, near Burford to see this outstanding garden, (rarely open to the public) which was created by Anthea Gibson, one of Britain’s foremost landscape gardeners.

The house dates back to the 16th century and was bought by Thomas and Anthea Gibson in 1979.  By 1912 the gardens had been laid out in the Arts and Crafts Style but since then Anthea Gibson added contemporary features to the traditional English garden structure of rose garden and kitchen garden. Anthea died in 2010 but her work was been continued by the Head Gardener, David Baldwin.

Following a talk from the Head Gardener you will be free to wonder through the magnificent double herbaceous borders, the topiary garden, the Full Moon Garden and the many water features: rills, pools and lakes.

A short walk away and well worth visiting is the small St Mary’s church with Norman features and some unusual monuments.

Timetable: We meet at Westwell Manor by 2.30pm ready for our tour. There are number of excellent places for tea in Burford (2 miles away)

Booking: Essential – click here for a booking form. This is a car share event so we would be grateful if you could indicate at the bottom of the form if you need a lift or can offer a lift.

Price: £15.00 members,  £20 guests.  The money raised from visitors goes to Aspire, a charity connected with Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital where Anthea Gibson was designing a garden.
