A visit to one of Europe’s most outstanding open-air museums. Tuesday 13th September
Since opening in 1948 this museum (just outside Cardiff) has become one of Europe’s most outstanding open-air museums. It shows how the people of Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time over the centuries. It stands in beautiful countryside in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle – well worth a visit too.
The open-air section of the museum now has well over 40 original buildings moved and re-erected from various parts of Wales. They include a school, a chapel, workshops and a mediaeval church with a fine series of wall paintings. There are frequent demonstrations of local crafts while the houses and cottages are often manned so that various details of the properties can be explained.
In 2011 St Fagans was awarded an £11 million grant from the National Lottery, the largest amount ever awarded to Wales. The result was a massive redevelopment which included three new galleries, the recreation of an iron age farmstead and a mediaeval Prince’s court , a new restaurant and more.
There are several restaurants and cafes. Picnics are welcomed and have their own special areas with tables.
